Learning Objectives
By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of working with Indigenous community members as research partners to advance gastrointestinal research.
  • Describe the prevalence and incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and health care utilization among First Nations (FN) community members
  • Distinguish the perceptions of FNs living with IBD, including barriers and facilitators to access health care and understanding their IBD health care expectations. (Dr. Pena-Sanchez)
  • Describe the impact of IBD on pregnancy outcomes and the impact of pregnancy on IBD
  • Appropriately assess IBD activity and provide optimal management preconception and during pregnancy.
  • Evaluate the safety of medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding. (Dr. Seow)
  • Explain key factors that play a role in preventing flare-ups and disease progression in patients with IBD
